History

BRIGHTON DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB
BRIGHTON EAST CRICKET CLUB
Founded in 1929, the Club initially began playing matches on a half pitch in a paddock in
Davey Street
, off Dendy Street Brighton. Funds were raised from ‘Euchre’ parties at Members homes. During the 1930’s and 40’s, the Club was located in the Scout Hall at Hurlingham Park, subsequently moving to Wilson Recreation Hall in Outer crescent. In the late 1950’s some games were played at Dendy Park on malthoid wickets, where the Tennis Club now stands.  The Club relocated again back to Hurlingham while Dendy Park and the “tip” area were redeveloped
The early 1960’s saw a dramatic increase in the number of teams fielded from two to six and return to Dendy Park using the old athletics change-rooms as its base, pending construction of a new Pavilion, which was completed in 1982. This pavilion, still the home of the Club, was funded by Brighton Council and Club Members, and officially named the Jamieson Pavilion in recognition of the total of over 120 years service to the Club by the late John Jamieson and his two brothers Fred and David (both of whom are still active in Club affairs)
In the mid 1980’s, the Club introduced Women’s Cricket, entering a team in the Victorian Women’s Cricket Association, followed by a second team in the early 1990’s and in 1996 an Under 17 team was formed to provide an avenue for development of players. The Club has been strong and successful in this arena, and some six premierships have been won by the women’s teams as well as elevation to the top women's grade (District Firsts) from 2003 to 2005.  A particularly proud achievement is that Melanie Jones who currently has represented Australia at Test level in women’s cricket, came through the Club’s ranks.
